Network Location

Why you need to set up a network location

Each location has individual DNS settings to match a specific network configuration. For example:

  1. You can have one location for your Home which is set up Google DNS (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) so you can easily access Facebook and Google Hangout. With this setting it also work very well in most Coffee shop.
  2. In our School we block external DNS include Google DNS so you need to use our School premise DNS server to access School services so you need a Network Location for School.

So Network Location will save your time, you don't have to manually redo your configuration for many time.

Let's start

Procedure: create new Network Location -> name it -> do your network configuration -> Apply (SAVE) -> switch between Location.

Open your System Preferences -> Network -> Edit Locations...

Click + then type in School (you need to be in school to do configure for this location)

Select Location School and then click Apply

Wait several second while your machine apply change

Make Home location

Click Advanced to change DNS server address to Google DNS server address

Click Apply to save your Location setting

our Locations are ready!

Now you can switch between Locations from both Network Setting Box and from Apple Icon (top left) -> Location.

From now on if you, your student or your colleague open Chrome browser and see the Dinosaur with this DNS error message -> you need to switch your location to School.
