    Mandarin 1

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12  Length: 1 year   Credit: 1.0    

    Prerequisite: None

    Mandarin 1 introduces students to the foundations of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Mandarin. It also prepares them for further study of the language. The course begins by introducing students to the basics of Mandarin pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structures, and Chinese characters. Students then build on these foundational skills to develop basic proficiency in personal and social communication. Cultural information about Mandarin-speaking communities is interwoven into the class.

    Mandarin 2

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12    Length: 1 year    Credit: 1.0                

    Prerequisite: Mandarin 1,  Middle School Mandarin 2, or Middle School Mandarin 3 and teacher recommendation

    Homework: LIGHT

    Students in Mandarin 2 continue to develop their language skills, learning more complex vocabulary and grammar, and developing their listening and reading skills. Students use the language for authentic communication and presentation. Students explore stories, articles, poems, and other texts in Mandarin to deepen their understanding of Mandarin speaking peoples and cultures.

    Mandarin 3

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12   Length: 1 year   Credit: 1.0                  

    Prerequisite: Mandarin 2 and teacher recommendation

    Homework: MODERATE

    Students in Mandarin 3 will continue to develop advanced abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and further expand their knowledge of Mandarin-speaking communities, enabling them to read longer texts, poems, anecdotes, and engage in extended conversations. Students will also write essays on a variety of topics.

    Mandarin 4

    Grade: 11, 12   Length: 1 year   Credit: 1.0              

    Prerequisite: Mandarin 3 and teacher recommendation

    Homework: MODERATE

    Students in Mandarin 4 will enhance their abilities to understand the culture of Mandarin-speaking communities as reflected in various concepts of the language. These concepts enable them to think about some major differences between cultures, and to express their opinions by using colloquialisms and slang. Students will also be expected to complete a research essay and deliver a speech with a high level of fluency and accuracy. 

    IB Mandarin ab initio, Year 1

    Grade: 11   Length: First of 2 years   Credit: 1.0

    This course is a language acquisition course for students with little or no experience in the language. Students develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using basic vocabulary and sentence structures.  The IB Mandarin ab initio program focuses on a dynamic combination of knowledge, skills, independent critical and creative thought and international-mindedness.

    This course is a continuation of Mandarin ab initio, Year 1. Students in Mandarin ab initio will continue to improve their communicative competence in a variety of everyday situations and prepare for the internal and external examinations. Students express themselves about a variety of familiar topics, and deepen their understanding of Chinese-speaking communities by exploring stories, articles, poems, films, and other texts. All students who complete this course will be expected to sit the IB Mandarin ab initio examination.

    IB Mandarin B SL, Year 1

    Prerequisite: Mandarin  3 and teacher recommendation

All students who complete this course will be expected to sit the IB Mandarin B SL examination.
